At Osjá we stand for sustainability. We find ourselves responsible in having a minimum negative impact on the environment and for ensuring fair pay. The health and well being of the weavers and farmers are our priority. Through our collaboration we effectively observe the development, empowerment and improvement of entire communities, which have successfully built schools and rebuilt their homes. Education in these communities has created opportunities for entrepreneurship and social inclusion.
Our fabric comes from the depths of South East Asia. Handwoven on traditional wooden looms by highly skilled women in Takéo, East Cambodia. The art of weaving has been passed on through Khmer women from generation to generation and requires years of training. The organic cotton used for our garments is grown locally and hand dyed with organic plant dyes.
Amidst an era of fast fashion, we chose to develop a garment that has been around for millennia. A design that transcended through the ages yet has managed to surpass trends. If there’s any garment that could represent the definition of ‘slow fashion’, a Kimono would be it. In Japanese, ‘Kimono’, literally translates to ‘clothing’. The ‘Crop Kimono’ and ‘Haori’ designs are inspired by a Haori, traditionally a half coat, worn open or closed. The full-length Kimono is based on the Yukata Kimono, worn by men and women. The designs, although complex in structure, represent simplicity and minimalism.
Osjá was born at the intersection of style and sustainability. In gratitude to our inspiring surroundings in Cambodia and our desire to create beautiful, sustainable garments, we and our partners have embarked on a journey to fulfil a mission.
The complex and elaborate artistry of handwoven cotton on traditional wooden looms in Takéo Province had unfortunately been abandoned and forgotten, people in the cities replaced local for major brands and high street fashion. At Osjá we work with local communities and businesses to re-introduce the skill of traditional weaving to work with inspired, contemporary, quality design. Our brand stands for equality within the global garment industry, fair pay and ethical considerations to environmental issues. All garments are made with natural fabrics and dyes.
